wined and whined

Friday night I met up with Heather and her friend Alyssa to the corner wine bar/pizza place Frasca. Did I mention it is heaven that I live with one wine bar on the corner of my block and another two blocks down? Of course, I had to limit my wine intake because its not free like the wine styles tastings. So I settled for just one glass of Reisling. We had a delcious appetizer plate of cheese and bruschetta and meat. And then I had a shrimp and bacon pizza. That sentence included three of my favorite food words.

Heather made me take pictures of her trying to look serious.

Afterwards we headed over to the moon and while this random dude was outside they tried on his motorcycle helmet. Shhh.

1. Last night I met up with Chelsa and Tammy to go see some improv at iO. It was awesometacular. Tammy's boyfriend was in the first group and they were hilareous. There was then another group who were really funny and a third guy who did a one-man show where he improvised an entire musical! It was pretty amazing. Afterwards we got Ian's pizza. I was kind of boring and just got a veggie slice but it is hard to pass up a colorful slice of mushrooms and spinach. Next time I will try something weirder.

2. Tomorrow I am driving to the Detroit-area for a calamari eating contest!

3. I am too excited planning what I am going to eat on vacation(s)! Can you say bacon jam?

4. I wanted to drive home from NYC via Virginia, but it would have cost over $600 just to rent the car alone without even factoring in the gar prices. I bought a plane ticket home. Did I already tell you that?

5. FYI, Stweart BC has a TOASTER MUSEUM!

Heather and I went to Volo for dinner. Do you even have to ask how excited I am to have a wine bar two blocks away? I hadn't been there since my birthday two years ago. We got free glasses of '08 Cortijo, Viura, Blanco Rioja because I mentioned that I followed them on Twitter and that I saw a promotion for it there. I'm awesome. I had truffled potato ravioli. yum. and lots of wine. yum.

MK had a BBQ out in Bolingbrook. He had kabobs. I ate a lot. And tacoish dip and salads and brownies that others brought. It was fun. We made bunnies and deer do naughty things. And we then watched a couple of Top Gears.

Sunday, May 24
Spent all morning making my bedroom purdy. The living room is still my closet.

In the afternoon Chelsa came over and we headed to Eric's place for a BBQ. We had cheese-filled hot dogs bought with food stamps. We watched people play beer die and I still have no idea what the rules are. And flippy cup but I am pretty sure the rules of that were much simpler.

Afterwards we headed to Hydrate for a benefit for Ron's theatre company. It was a cabaret. Me and Chelsa stole a lot of popcorn. The bartender was hot but I had to keep reminding myself that he was gay. And Ron's boyfriend was a little drunk. By a little I think I mean a lot.

Afterwards Chelsa and I went to get dinner at some Mexican place in boystown. The mole enchilada I had was excellent but the waiter screwed up our charges and then gave us back the wrong leftovers. I had to eat her tacos for lunch.

Packing, packing, and more packing.

Friday, May 22
Moved a load of stuff into the new place with Heather. Listened to everyone's advice and painted my room blue instead of tan (no I did not paint it pink).

Saturday, May 23
Moved (almost) everything else over. by myself. My arms hurt. This included lugging a pretty heavy bookcase and nightstand up to the third floor. By myself. I am sore. Re-painted the room tan because I hated the blue (no, I did not paint it pink).

Monday was the season finale of 24. I don't remember what happened. The first half of the season was full of a million plot twists and new stuff. The second half nothing happened. Lame.

Tuesday, May 19 – Wednesday, May 20
American Idol ended this week. Thank God. Adam lost. Thank God. Go Kris! People are saying that there was some conspiracy or something. No, there was a conspiracy from the start from American Idol trying to pimp Adam out to win. Sure he was a good singer but I would never buy an album or listen to him sing. Of anyone on that show I would by a Kris CD. Plus Danny (who came in third) and Kris had similar styles so Kris probably got most of Danny's votes after he was kicked out.
The most shocking thing about the finale was that it actually ended a full minute early.

the road to triumph - part two

last Sunday I hung out with MK and Adam all day in the garage as they rebuilt their Triumph TR6. We took a lot of trips to stores where I pointed pink things out. Like pink butt connectors. They sell those in the auto store. Just sayin'. For lunch my happy meal came with a kids bop CD full of songs innapropriate for children that age to be singing. I made them listen to it while they worked.

bacon and sushi? i'm in heaven!

Saturday night we went out for JoeJoe's birthday. He picked a sushi place near him that turned out to be delicious! We got tons and tons of it!

Including a special...bacon bomber! Sushi with bacon? Amazing!

At one point during the meal it was brought up that Meredith's bachelorette was the night before. SO at the end of the night they brought out a cake for her and JoeW...he commented that they brought them a cake on JoeJoe's birthday...so they brought us another one! Lots of cake? Awesome.

martinis and drag queens

Friday night was Meredith's bachelorette party! We first met up at 10 Pin to do some bowling and so Meredith could determine what size balls she likes.

We had a ...few...martinis and mini hot dogs and mini burgers and pizza and macaroni...and we bowled. And danced and sang a little. Just a little.

I actually managed to win a game! (with the ever so high score of 100).

And we had desserts of s'mores and cookies!

Afterwards we went to The Baton to watch a drag show. Becasue apparently Meredith loves drag queens. It was a pretty good show and was fun to watch. And since she was wearing the full out crown and all so they could tell she was celebrating I think she got a little more attention.

It was an awesomely fun girls night out! Can't wait for the wedding!

I took pictures at MK's all afternoon and stayed through a bbq and took more pictures. Here are a few "outtakes" that I liked but either didn't fit with the story or weren't good enough quality:

monday
24 night. The last episode of House confused the hell out of me. 24 is almost over. This season has had about 5,000 plot lines.
On the way home I turned onto a street. Another car got beside me. I was in the left lane he was in the right lane. He then decided to make a U-Turn. From the right lane. In front of my car. I slammed on my brake and luckily avoided hitting him. Unfortunately the guy behind me hit me. Luckily that was just JoeW (we were both leaving the same place) and luckily it was only a small hit and there was no damage. It was kind of akin to hitting a car while parallel parking where you know you hit them but also know you didn't cause any damage. Although, I like to say that JoeW rear ended me like Jack Bauer rear ended Tony Almeida. Just sayin.

tuesday
At work I got a call that someone needed photos. I wish I had brought my good camera but they had me do it with my point and shoot anyways.
After work I went to Wine Styles for wine and then to Hollywood Boulevard to see Star Trek. It was a good movie but confusing.
SPOILER I think I just don't really comprehend parallel universes. I think of time travel in Back to the Future terms where if he changes something in the past he could have never been born. And what was with the dinasaur? END SPOILER The waitress pissed me off becasue she kept pacing by and trying to take my fries away. I finally just let her take them because I was tired of her inturrupting the movie for me.

wednesday
We all officially failed at Idol. I really hate Adam. He is going to win. Why was Katy Perry wearing an cape that said Adam Lambert? I object. Maybe just because I don't like either of them. This doesn't matter anymore, but for the record:

Foods I am craving:

2. These cinnamon rolls.
3. A milkshake (I am pretty much always craving a milkshake).
4. Funnel cake.

Me: Because my penis is really small.

I have started a new photography project. Basically any Sunday I am free I am holing myself up in a garage with MK and Adam and documenting the rebuilding of a 1972 Triumph TR6. So Sunday after lunch I headed over to MK's and followed them around for eight hours.

Sunday was Mother's Day so my family met up at Jennifer's place for a Chinese food lunch. I took a lot of pictures of the baby. Everyone calls Dylan "The Baby."

Jen thinks she taught Dylan to throw a ball. That just means she puts a ball on him and it rolls off.

I also took pictures of Samson because he feels left out.

let's get andrew drunk!

After the photo shoot Saturday I met with Jen and Andrew downtown to walk through Millennium Park and Grant Park. Who knew it would be so COLD?

There was a wedding party taking photos and the bridesmaids were in big pink dresses. We determined that JoeJoe definitely needs to wear that for her wedding. And Buckingham Fountain was open! Rejoice!

Joe and Alina met up with us too so we headed to Elephant and Castle for dinner. They didn't have beer on tap and were out of most beers. Not that I cared. My fish and chips were yummy though.

Afterwards we tried to find a bar downtown that was open but failed. Eventually we made our way over to a Bar Louie and had some drinks. For some reason at the end of the night the waiter brought us a free round. Umm, OK? We didn't mind but were thoroughly confused as to why we were given about $30 worth of drinks on a $60 bill.

Saturday I spent the day doing a photo shoot for Project 891 Theatre Company's inaugural production of Never the Sinner. We shot some in the "studio" and some on location ot the Green Mill.

I got 4 pecan pancakes out of the deal. But I only ate 2 of them.

I still have to edit them a million of them, but here are a few highlights...

There were a few that we did on a blank(ish) background so the graphic designer can edit them later.

1. Eric officially won the pool. There are still two weeks left of Idol but he was the only one who could win at this point. Unless Kris dies and thy bring back Lil. Just sayin. He made $20.

2. Last night was a milkshake kind of night so I found someone to go get one with me. I met Mat and we headed to Margie's and he bought me a chocolate shake. We then walked around Wicker Park (the actual park) and found goats and a dead guy. Then I proceeded to tear duct tape off of a random guys car because I mistook it for mine. His car is probably going to fall apart now. I just saw the bumper and freaked because on the highway something flew onto my car and was stuck there flapping around the whole trip. I saw that and thought duct tape managed to get around my car and I freaked. Did I mention I can be kind of an idiot?
Then we went back to his place and watched Milk, which is not a documentary on cows and shows a lot of gay sex. It was a good movie. Not for either of those reasons.

3. My point and shoot's screen now has a weird marking in it and it keeps growing. I am resisting all temptations to buy a new point and shoot as this one still functions fine.

4. My new lens is bigger than my head.

5. Schoolhouse Rock rocks. Especially when competitive eater Badlands Booker sings the part of the walrus...

now on to the planning!

1. I always find it funny when I meet someone new and they say "I know who you are they talk about you all the time." I'm not that interesting!

2. I took the days off and said yes. My summer vacation will now consist of flying to Seattle, driving to Hyder, Alaska. Driving back to Seattle. Spending a few days there with Scotty. Flying to NYC for a few days and to see the hot dog eating contest.

3. So my new lens should be delivered today. I was goign to buy it from the camera store I always go to but I found it cheaper (with no tax and free shipping) from another camera store so I bought it there...of course, that still leaves me with $500 in gift certificates to my normal store...These are the things on my wish list I am thinking about...

Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L II USM Zoom Lens (~half)
Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens (~half)
PocketWizard (and light stand setup)
fancy tripod
battery grip
Car battery charger

one.
I am considering doing an insane vacation that would involve flying to Seattle, driving to Alaska, driving back to Seattle, spending a few days in Seattle, flying to New York for the hot dog eating contest...I would need to take a week and a half off of work. Should I go for it?
(p.s. anyone want to go to the hot dog eating contest with me on July 4? Anyone? Please?)

two.
The Official White House Flickr. Can I just have Pete Souza's job?

three.
I may have spent twice my tax refund on a new lens.

four.
Monday was 24 night. Meredith made the most delicious bacon wrapped scallops ever. I need the recipe. The episode was kind of boring. We all made fun of the scene where the first daughter loomed over a giant "Execute" button on a webpage. I remarked the next day that that button would have come in handy before buying my lens. JoeJoe said I would have pressed it anyways.

Things learned on my Metropolis road trip:

1. I am a good driver when I am paying attention.

2. Louisville Kentucky is three hours from the Illinois/Kentucky border.

3. When someone says "It's $3 for this museum or $5 for both" it isn't always a good deal.

4. It is really hard to try to take photos, take video, and update twitter all at the same time.

5. 4am is a time that should not exist.

6. Yup, I definitely am Mel...

Saturday morning I woke up at the not so bright and extremely early hour of 4am and hopped in my car shortly after. Flopsy was in his Flopsy cave. A Coke was in the cup holder. A video camera was in my lap. My Garmin was raring to go. I wasn't so raring but more like slightly functioning.

So I took off towards to Urbana to pick up Brian. I drove by the elusive Kankakee giant Lincoln and when Chicago stations ran out I found a Christian station's Saturday morning kids show that was playing songs about pirates and pies.

I got to Brian's apartment around 7am and slightly after we were off. He thinks I am a worse driver than I am. That is only because I was trying to video tape things while I was driving. I told him that I am a good driver when I am paying attention. We followed behind a Channel 3 news car for a while and joked that he must be on his way to Metropolis to cover the eating contest. I tried to shave minutes off the time my Garmin said we would get to Metropolis.

Finally after forever worth of driving we made it to our destination: Metropolis, Illinois: home of Superman and home of the day's Major League Eating Ice Cream eating contest!

We drove straight to the Superman Museum because we wanted to make sure to get it in. The last time I had made my way to Metropolis was two years ago and we had gotten there so late in the day that the museum was closed. I was happy that there was a contest there this Saturday because it gave me an excuse to drive across our lovely state to finally see the museum!

We went to buy a ticket and the guy at the counter told us that it would cost $3 to get in or $5 to go to both this and the Americana Hollywood Museum. So we bought the combo for an extra two bucks and headed in to see Superman!

The Superman Museum was basically what I expected: a large segmented room full of paraphernalia and toys and merchandise and costumes and etc. There were some creepy dolls and original props. The most disturbing thing I saw was some jars of Superman Peanut butter from who knows when that were used but still had peanut butter in them.

After checking out all that the museum had to offer we stopped in the gift shop so I could bring my friend Ron back some souvenirs (he's a huge fan) and then stepped back outside to visit the statue. In what is dubbed "Superman Square" there is a giant statue dedicated to the famous superhero!

When we had all of the Superman we could handle we headed off to redeem the second half of our museum combo: The Americana Hollywood Museum.
What do you say about the Americana Hollywood Museum? Well...as much as I am a huge proponent of all things crazy and wacky and weird, I sometimes have to step back and say "ummm...what? Why?" This museum was way bigger than the first, but most of it didn't seem as collectible. It was basically a museum of things you could have bought at the store at one point. There were rooms devoted to Elvis and James Dean and the Justice League. There was a room with a creepy fish tank with Jaws in it. When I walked in I could feel the carpet was really cushy and wet. There were rooms with a casino set up and a mannequin dressed as Rhett Butler. It was a definitive hodgepodge of pop culture tchotchkes.

After strolling through the museum we headed down the block to the Harrah's where the contest would be. I forgot to check where exactly it was so after spending 5 minutes getting scanned at the Casino's security point and then ten minutes later being told I had to leave because they apparently let me through the security checkpoint with a giant camera around my neck when they shouldn't have, we were told that it was in the hotel.
Alright. So we headed to the hotel and bummed around the lobby until about half hour before the contest. We went to the door and they checked our IDs. Apparently since the casino was sponsoring the event you had to be 21 to enter. The lady checked my ID but said it was expired and I needed to show a different one. But I showed her the sticker on the back that I had a 4-year extension for not getting any tickets. See, I AM a good driver :-)

Brian and I were the first ones there so we picked a seat front row center. And were the only ones there for a while, but luckily others started trickling in. I waved hello to Sonya when she entered and said hi to Pat when he came in. He was pretty surprised that I had come and drove out for the event.

The contest began with an amateur contest for charity between two hotel employees and a celebrity. The celebrity being a guy from Channel three who I swear actually was the guy we were following. Their contest was, I think, 8 minutes and the woman from the hotel won with 9 bowls.

After the contest The MC gave out some T-Shirts. I won a free t-shirt by correctly guessing that Joey Chestnut was ranked as the number 1 eater.

And then the real competitors were introduced: Jim "Hammer" Hamrick, William "Wild Bill" Myers, "Nasty" Nathan Biller, Erik "The Red" Denmark, Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas, and Pat "Deep Dish" Bertoletti. Before going out Pat beckoned me up to the stage give me his camera. I passed those duties onto Brian because I already had three cameras of my own in my lap to juggle. Brian told me I need to hire a crew to follow me around.

The contestants lined up in behind bowls of ice cream. The MC counted down. And then the eaters were off!

And then...it was over? It literally felt like a 30 second contest. Before you even knew it had begun Pat's hands were in the air having finished. The rest of the contest went on for another 2 minutes until everyone cleaned their bowls. Crazy.

The final results (times/quantity from Eatfeats) were:
1. Pat - 46 seconds
2. Sonya - 1 minute, 10 seconds
3. Erik - 1 minute, 12 seconds
4. Nate - 2 minutes, 20 seconds
5. Wild Bill - 2 minutes, 20 seconds (finished 18 4-ounce bowls)
6. Jim - 2 minutes, 20 seconds (finished 17 4-ounce bowls)

Needless to say it was insanely fast and I think my ratio for amount of time driving vs. amount of time watching eating record has been broken.

I gave Pat back his camera and congratulated him. The MC who had noticed we were the first ones there thanked us for coming and Brian asked for a t-shirt so he got a free one too!

We hopped back in the car and headed to the Big John to snap some pictures of their grocery clerk. Then we decided that we were so close to Kentucky so we might as well go. So we drove into Kentucky to gas up black pickle. On the way there we were joking about the fact that we would now be able to say we drive to Kentucky. And I jokingly said "for the Kentucky Derby." Then we both paused and looked at each other and said "Kentucky Derby!" Of course, after looking it up Louisville would still have been another 3 hours away (not to mention the fact that we probably wouldn't have gotten anywhere near Churchill Downs) so we scrapped that idea and headed home.

We made a bunch of stops on the way. First to see a Uniroyal Gal...

Then a giant bull...

Then the Goat Tower of Baaa (a winding tower that goats play in which is apparently only one of three in the world)...

And finally the Gays, IL 2-story outhouse, which I had seen before but Brian hadn't.

We were going to stop at the World's Tallest Lincoln, but it was getting late and I had told some people in Urbana that I would get dinner with them. So we headed back to Urbana and I dropped Brian off and got Friday's with Sid and Sarah and Jen and Andrew. Luckily Jen let me crash on her couch for the night because I was exhausted and don't think I could have eked in the last 2.5 hours of driving.

So yeah, that was my Saturday: Superman, roadside attractions, an eating contest, and twelve hours of driving. What better a way to spend the day?

Last week Meredith celebrated her birthday. Friday we all met up at Kona Grill for dinner. We decided to get some delicious sushi as an appatizer so we could get both entrees and sushi. That was a good call. We also got onion strings. Yum. The ordering process was actually pretty easy as Alina, Meredith, and I all got the macadmia nut chicken, Joejoe and Joe both got the meatloaf and Maureen was different and got a salad. Then we got a chocolate brownie and a white chocolate cheesecake. And Meredith got a drink that came with rock candy which was awesome.
