The Beach

I sat there
on the edge of the beach
like the edge of the world
I am afraid
Not of the fierce waves
not of sharks or heat or drowning
I’m afraid of truth
So I don’t even write your name
Just initials-
yours and mine
on the edge of the sand.
The water will take them away
like they never existed
Why do I write there
waste my time knowing
they soon will be gone
Power
When I wrote your precious letters
I knew I was saying the truth
and for a second in time
you had the power to know
that I love you
